FOLSOM, NJ, August 6, 2021 – SJI (NYSE: SJI) subsidiaries South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas are offering training for first responders in their service areas on how to handle emergency situations involving natural gas. So far, nearly 20 New Jersey agencies are on the 2021 schedule for SJI Utilities Emergency Preparedness Training, but more are encouraged to sign up.
The free SJI Utilities Emergency Preparedness Training is available
in-person or online. The class helps fire and other emergency departments understand what to expect from the gas company during a response and educates them on what to do prior to our arrival. Topics include:
- Natural gas safety basics
- South Jersey/Elizabethtown Gas company overview
- Investigation methods for indoor and outdoor leaks
- First responder safety
- Fire department do’s and don’ts
- Unified command: working together
- Natural gas fires
- Evidence preservation
Elizabethtown Gas employees recently presented emergency information to over 100 Woodbridge Township full-time and volunteer firefighters.
Equally important, the classes serve as a platform for gas company employees and local safety officials to meet in person or virtually to form relationships prior to meeting during an actual emergency. Both groups can also discuss facilities and equipment specific to a county or municipality which may require extra care in the event of a natural gas-related emergency.
